Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe

NEWSLETTER- 15 January 2007

The George / Knysna line is still closed after heavy rain caused severe flood damage between George and Wilderness in early August 2006. A landslide directly above the railway line at Dolphins point remains the issue of concern, as a solution to stabilize/secure the slip needs to be agreed upon by all parties involved before any repair work could be undertaken. Only once the go ahead has been received repair work can start and it will then take a further 6 to 8 months before the train will be operating on this beautiful scenic route. Currently all efforts are made in solving this problem and the matter has been referred to the Minister of Public Enterprise and Minister of Tourism for their intervention to get the Choo Tjoe operational again.

With the above in mind we are continuing with the alternative route as follows.

The Outeniqua  Choo-tjoe

NEWSLETTER-23 SEPTEMBER 2006

Provisionally the George / Knysna line has been closed until further notice due to the unsafe conditions below the “slip” at Kaaimanspass. When this slip occurs, damage will be caused to the railway line below, resulting in further delays. We cannot run the risk of reintroducing the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe on this section of line until we have received the assurance of the various authorities that it is safe to operate.

With the above in mind we are introducing an alternative route as follows.
