ROY COLIN MITCHELL Roy Mitchell was a railway man born and bred He was a man of courage and served the iron way well The iron road is a hard road and the work is never ending Working night and day on the iron way to keep his dream alive He gave his life upon the track, the sixth day of June the day By his deeds you shall know him By the work of his hands By his family and by his friends that mourn him By the love that he bore And the life that he gave The run has ended The shift completed So long mates so long God Speed, Roy, God Speed. |
A larger than life character he will be missed by the world of steam and railways, and by the world in general. His legacy lives on in the various projects he was involved with.

Dear Roy
We cannot believe it! You, our best friend, had to leave us on so cruel kind. We will try to continue your work. It will be our task to put your visions, about preserving the narrow-gauge railways of southern Africa, into practice. We will always keep you in memory, in addition,we like to thank you, that we had been allowed to become frends of you and your great family. Roy we miss you !! |
|
Roy was killed doing what he loved, working on the narrow gauge. Passionate about railways and narrow gauge in particular, Roy was a stalwart of 2'0" preservation in South Africa and a driving force behind the Apple Express until recently. His unorthodox style and maverick actions did not always endear him to everyone but his passion ruled all.
